12 days of up and coming gymnasts, day five

Germany's Fabian Hambuchen is already upgrading his routines.

Fabian Hambuchen, Germany: On the scale of up-and-coming gymnasts, Hambuchen is certainly the most well-established of the group, but I (and many other gymnastics fans, I’m sure) believe this guy has only begun to tap into his potential.

Hambuchen probably thinks so too, especially as his Olympics was not exactly the medal-fest he might have hoped for. At a smaller competition in Germany last month, the 2007 World high bar champion, debuted a hugely difficult routine with a whopping 7.5 A-score.

He underwent a small surgery to repair a torn ligament in the middle finger of his left hand before Christmas but is expected to make a quick recovery and has apparently secured an invitation to the 2009 American Cup in February.
