12 days of up-and-coming gymnasts, day three

Jeffey Wammes, and Epke Zonderland, Netherlands: This up-and-coming Dutch gymnast has been poised to come into his own for a long time now (his first big international result was fifth on floor at the 2005 World Championships), and 2009 could be his time.

Two broken ankles suffered after a bad landing on floor at the 2006 French International might have ended his career, but Wammes bounced back with surprising speed — in 2007, he won the bronze medal on vault at the European Championships.

Wammes lost out on the single Dutch berth to Beijing to countryman Epke Zonderland, a high bar specialist who nonetheless represented his country well in China and should also be amazing in the coming year.

Wammes, meanwhile, rebounded by closing out the year with a silver medal on vault at the 2008 World Cup Final (For the record, Zonderland scored big there too, winning high bar with a nearly flawless routine.)

Both Wammes, 21, and Zonderland, 22, have a lot of time to make a mark in the sport. Given their end-2008 results, 2009 could be big for both.

Historical note: Wammes is the younger brother of Dutch elite Gabriella Wammes, a member of the fifth-place finishing Dutch women’s team at the 2001 World Championships.

Fun fact: In Dutch, “Zonderland” translates to “without country.” According to his website, he’s also studying medicine, although he admits that “it is not the easiest study to combine with athletics.
