Memmel said after the U.S. women won the silver medal in team gymnastics Wednesday that she’d been competing with a broken bone in her right ankle. The 2005 world gymnastics champion hurt the ankle during training Aug. 4, but competed on uneven bars in both the preliminaries and the team finals.
“I have mixed emotions,” she said. “I would have loved to compete on four events, but the silver medal for my team is great.”

Now what on earth would cause her to say that at this point in time? i don’t think there was any need for this sort of revelation. Yes, it’s broken and that’s terrible but to announce this soon after China’s win, it just seems like She’s making excuses.

she really doesn’t have anything to make excuses for. they probably waited until after she was done competing so the chinese wouldn’t know how bad she was hurt. like maybe if things got sticky they could throw memmel in on beam or floor or something (not that it would have been possible or changed anything) but not to give the chinese one more mental advantage. if she had pulled out a week ago they probably would have reported it then.

Wow…a stuck dismount with a broken bone. That girl is tough.
It’s a horrible, horrible shame that she has had so many injuries, especially this most recent one. I really would have liked to have seen her get her Olympic experience in full, not just one event.

I don’t think that announcing the break was meant as an excuse. Everyone has been wondering how bad the ankle really was, knowing how damned tough Chellsie is. I think the news of the break was held back so that Chellsie could just concentrate on doing what she needed to do. Just as with her shoulder injury in 2006 (and subsequent beam and floor routines), she decided to dodge the media attention in favor of just doing her gymnastics, which I respect a great deal. If anything, announcing the break sounds like an apology. I’m sure that Chellsie wished she could’ve stepped up and done a floor routine after Alicia’s fall on beam, and I know that *I* was secretly hoping for her to rip off her warm-ups and go for it! 🙂
