One reporter finally says what a lot of people think about Carly Patterson. Still, ouch. Read Carly Patterson struggles in post-Olympic career, from the L.A. Times.

Sidenote: Didn’t know Carly had three tattoos.

“Morgenstein notes that Michelle Kwan — who has zero figure-skating gold medals — is a beloved role model, a popular speaker and a young woman who has a job in President Bush’s administration while gold medal-winners such as Sarah Hughes and Tara Lipinski, who tried to pursue an acting career, have had less staying power.”

Better qualify that statement there buddy….zero figure-skating gold medals? Ha.

I see that jaz has beaten me to my comment. Zero figure-skating gold medals and Michelle Kwan do not go in the same sentence. Sure, she never won gold at the Olympics, but I’m pretty sure that she has quite a few golds hanging around anyway.

As far as Carly goes, I feel bad for her in a way, but at the same time, she at least got to live one dream. Most people don’t even get that. Asking for a successful music career on top of that is maybe just a bit too much.

Zero golds for Michelle Kwan? Nine world-titles for Nastia?

    Carly who?

Hot topic for me as you know Blythe! Heh…so now I have to add something. I’m pretty sure Michelle’s staying power has a lot more to do with the fact that she’s a legend, she stayed around in the skating world for 10+ years, delivered tear-jerker after tear-jerker and wasn’t a brat and had no attitude problems. 🙂

I feel bad for Carly. Who wants to be the next Mary Lou anyway? Good job to Carly for trying to stay true to herself and not just being what everyone else wants, even if she fails. Now they are touting Shawn Johnson as the next Mary Lou. Give it up people!!

I was gymnast who though that Carly Patterson was amazing. She was such a role model growing up for me. But after she won the Olympics I got reallyy mad at her. She basically blew the sport off and changed interests almost over night. I feel that she never did anything to help the sport and was just a wasted gold medal. It’s such a big honor to be named an Olympic All Around champion, and throwing it away is horrible. And with the 2008 Olympics, Shawn Johnson was never compared to Carly Patterson, Carly Patterson was barely even mentioned at the Olympics. You would think she would want to be at the Olympics and be involved with them, considering that there was a really good chance that a fellow American might carry on her title. Like what is wrong with her. I am really disappointed in Carly Patterson, and I feel that she really could have done something more than what she did. She’s not even worth looking up to as a role model anymore. Young gymnasts should find someone else to look up at rather than her.
