Utah’s April Fools article

The April Fool’s edition is a tradition at many college newspapers. On April 1, student journalists fill a real version of their newspaper with fake news. It’s a great opportunity to be creative in places where “news” stories are often less than fascinating.

The Daily Utah Chronicle has run an April Fool’s piece today on the Utah women’s gymnastics team, highlighting Sarah Shire’s departure from the team last season.

Shire, a scholarship freshman who trained with Terin Humphrey and Courtney McCool under Al Fong and Armine Barutyan-Fong at GAGE, was released from her scholarship by Utah coach Greg Marsden last summer. Marsden returned to her home state of Missouri and now competes for Mizzou. In the joke article, The Daily Utah Chronicle “discovers” the reason why.

There might have been a little more to the departure of former Utah gymnast Sarah Shire than homesickness. It appears now that an incident following a casual get-together held by some of the gymnasts might have instigated a rift between Shire and some of her teammates.

“We were all just sitting around at Nina (Kim) and Kristina (Baskett)’s house watching ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ you know, the one where Johnny Depp looks like a 28-year-old Dakota Fanning?” Shire said.

The mood in the room quickly turned from happiness to awkwardness.

“I can’t remember who said it, but someone said it was too bad they had already remade the movie, because Sarah would make a perfect Oompa Loompa,” Kim said.

It turns out that the suggestion landed a little closer to home than anyone could imagine.

No more than 10 seconds had gone by after the comment was made when one of the gymnasts made a startling discovery.

“At first I couldn’t believe it,” Beth Rizzo said. “But after we rewound the movie about four times, it was clear that one of the Oompa Loompas in the background was Sarah.”

Too much? What do you think?

Apparently others thought that it was too much, because the article seems to have been removed from the website.
