U.S. women’s trials, night one

By Blythe

Results, courtesy of International Gymnast Magazine:

1 Shawn Johnson 64.000
2. Nastia Liukin 63.500
3. Chellsie Memmel 62.250
4. Samantha Peszek 61.850
5. Ivana Hong 60.850
6. Jana Bieger 60.100
7. Mattie Larson 59.550

Barring catastrophe, Liukin — who hit her floor routine for the second time in two meets without the steps out of bounds or falls we’ve seen for nearly two years — and Johnson will be the two who are named to the Olympic team Sunday night.

IG’s online commentary called Samantha Peszek the fourth “lock” for the team, behind Johnson, Liukin and Alicia Sacramone, but it seems that Chellsie Memmel, with her 16 and up scores on bars and beam has effectively made her case for inclusion as well.

Jana Bieger, despite her impressive repertoire of skills, just isn’t getting the scores. Fifteen-year-old Ivana Hong outscored her in the all-around for the second meet running here, and has a more difficult vault.

    Nastia is tough.

I’m really impressed with her hitting Floor twice in series.

  2. Mally Says:

Jana may not be getting the all around scores but she did beat both Shayla and Bridget on bars, but then again Shawn beat all three of them so…
